Molina’s defense is widely heralded around baseball, and for good reason. He’s a secret star, whose value is clearly revealed by advanced fielding statistics:
Jose Molina’s range factor (defensive putouts plus assists/9 innings) has dramatically exceeded the league average for ten consecutive seasons — saving his teams hundreds of runs over that span.
Jose Molina’s caught stealing percentage for throwing out opposing baserunners has exceeded league average for eleven straight seasons, and he’s done that handling vastly different pitching staffs with the Angels, Yankees, Blue Jays and Rays.
Plus, he’s widely credited with calling exceptional games behind the plate, framing pitches (to “steal” strike calls) and handling pitching staffs. See Jose Molina’s advanced fielding stats here.
Baseball Prospectus recently wrote and article about the value of Molina’s pitch framing — showing how it saves his team run, and providing lots of video of actual game play to support its contention that Jose Molina is among the finest pitch-framing catchers in recent baseball history. Here’ what Baseball Prospectus had to say about ACES Client Jose Molina back in 2012.
